The award-nominated actress Diane Ladd passed away 89 years old.
This actor, with roles spanned National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, died at her home in Ojai, California. Her passing was announced in a statement by her offspring, award-winning actress her daughter Laura Dern.
Laura Dern, who starred with her mother in various films including Wild at Heart, called her “my wonderful hero and my special gift of a mother”, writing that she was by her side during her final moments.
“She was the most wonderful grandmother, mother, daughter, actress, artist and caring individual that only dreams could have seemingly created,” she stated. “We were fortunate to know her. She is flying with her angels now.”
Ladd’s early career featured minor parts in television programs including The Fugitive and the seventies featured her performing next to the legendary Jack Nicholson in Chinatown.
In the same year, 1974, she appeared with Ellen Burstyn in the Martin Scorsese celebrated film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. The performance brought Ladd her first Oscar nomination as best supporting actress.
Throughout the 1980s, she appeared in crime thriller Black Widow as well as funny follow-up National Lampoon’s holiday comedy while also joining the show Alice, a comedy program based on her earlier movie.
During the next ten years, she earned a further supporting actress Oscar nomination for her role in the David Lynch film the movie Wild at Heart where she acted as the mom of her real-life daughter Laura Dern’s role. The next year she received an additional nod for her acting in the film Rambling Rose which included Laura Dern.
“This movie that the late Princess Diana picked as her top choice, and she brought us to London for a special screening and a party in our honor,” Ladd recalled regarding Rambling Rose. “And she sat between us, taking our hands, and weeping, watching us perform.”
The 1990s also saw roles in humorous films The Cemetery Club bringing her back with Burstyn, Primary Colors, a political story, a political comedy, with John Travolta and the film by Alexander Payne Citizen Ruth, a dark comedy in which she portrayed the mother of Dern another time. The decade also saw her score nominations for Emmy Awards for performances on Dr Quinn, Grace Under Fire, a sitcom and Touched by an Angel.
She continued to star with Laura Dern in dramatic comedies Daddy and Them, the David Lynch project the movie Inland Empire and the series by Mike White satirical show Enlightened, a TV series. She was also seen next to Sandra Bullock, a star in the film 28 Days, Sir Anthony Hopkins in that movie and Jennifer Lawrence in Joy, a biographical drama.
Her later TV roles featured Ray Donovan, a drama and Young Sheldon.
She additionally penned and helmed the humorous movie Mrs Munck featuring her and ex-husband actor Bruce Dern. “Bruce is a great actor,” she said. “I’m privileged to have directed him in a film. In fact, I stand as the only woman in history to helm a film with her ex. I often joke: ‘I advise females, if you seek payback, helm a movie with your ex.’ But I’m only kidding.”
She was additionally a family member of the great Tennessee Williams, whom she described as “a significant impact in my life”.
During 2018, she received an incorrect diagnosis with lung disease and advised she only had half a year left yet she recovered completely once her daughter transferred her to a different hospital.
“When you use your pain and prevent it from festering similar to a wound, instead apply it to investigate, to make the path clearer for yourself and others, then you are winning,” Ladd expressed.
