Lawmakers from the Democratic party expressed outrage after Donald Trump charged a group of Democratic congress members of being "turncoats" and stated they should be arrested and punished "through capital punishment" following their release of a controversial video.
The video footage, shared on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic elected officials who formerly worked in military or intelligence capacities.
"Like us, you all took an vow to defend and uphold this national charter," the officials stated in the 90-second video. "Currently, the risks to our constitution don't only come from abroad, but from right here at home. Our regulations are clear, you can reject unlawful commands, you can refuse illegal orders, you have to decline illegal orders. No one has to execute commands that break the legal system or our founding principles."
The video message reportedly provoke a angry reaction from the ex-president.
On the following morning, Trump wrote on his social media platform: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate post, he declared: "This represents really bad, and Risky to our Nation. Their comments cannot be allowed to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a additional post, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also reposted a declaration that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Following Trump's comments on that day, House Democratic leader released a unified statement denouncing the comments.
"Violent politics has no place in America," they wrote. "Representatives who were featured in the video all served our United States with exceptional patriotism and distinction. We strongly condemn Donald Trump's disgusting and dangerous calls for execution against congressional representatives, and call on Republican lawmakers to strongly do the same."
The Democratic leaders also mentioned that they had been in touch with protective services "to guarantee the safety of these officials and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must immediately take down these extreme digital publications and retract his aggressive discourse before he leads to violence," the declaration stated.
The officials who appeared in the video also published a declaration.
"We are ex-military personnel and national security professionals who love this country and made an vow to defend and defend the founding document of the United States," they said. "Our pledge continues forever, and we intend to keep it. No warning, intimidation, or call for violence will stop us from that fundamental obligation."
"The most revealing aspect is that the ex-president deems it subject to penalty by execution for us to restate the legal requirements," they added. "Military personnel should understand that we have their backs as they execute their oath to the founding principles and responsibility to follow only legal commands. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our duty."
They stated: "The entire nation must join forces and censure the ex-president's requests for our death and political violence. This is a moment for principled stance."
The Democratic Senate minority leader also censured Trump's comments and published on social media: "It's important to understand: the former president is calling for the execution of government members."
He added: "This is an outright THREAT. Each congressional member, every Representative, the entire nation – regardless of party – should condemn this right away and unconditionally."
The GOP leader justified Trump's assertion that the Democrats had engaged in "treason", characterizing the video as "wildly inappropriate", adding: "It is very risky, you have leading members of the government instructing soldiers to defy commands, I think that's unprecedented in the nation's past."
The Republican leader also according to sources informed media outlets that in what he examined of Trump's posts, Trump was "explaining the violation of rebellion" but that "legal experts have to parse the language and determine all that."
During a White House press conference on that day, when inquired by a media member, "Would the president want to execute congressional representatives?", the White House press secretary answered: "No."
"We should understand about what the ex-commander in chief is addressing," the representative stated. "There are sitting members of the American legislature who conspired to organize a digital communication to members of the American armed forces, to active duty service members advising them to defy the executive's lawful orders."
She stated: "The sanctity of our defense system relies on the hierarchy, and if that chain of command is broken, it can result in people getting killed, it can cause confusion, and precisely what these elected officials ... are basically encouraging."
