Far-Right Ex- Lawmaker J.A. Kast Chosen as Chile's New President.

Following a conclusive second-round vote, ultra-conservative politician José Antonio Kast has secured the top job in Chile.

A Resounding Win

After over 99% of votes tallied, Kast garnered 58.17% of the votes, overcoming leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.

This signifies Kast's third presidency, having in the past been beaten by the current president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 runoff.

Platform Built On Security and Immigration

Recognized for his unwavering socially conservative views and admiration for the rule of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's platform was mostly built on promises to address increasing violence and significantly reduce migration.

He frequently blamed migrants, notably the roughly 330,000 unauthorized individuals in Chile, for public safety problems. During the election cycle, he gave an final demand for them to exit before the new term begins or face deportation.

Despite his decisive electoral win, Kast does not hold an overall majority in parliament, not in the lower house nor the Senate, even when all right-leaning parties are grouped together.

This political landscape might hinder his agenda, including a pledge to slash public spending by a significant sum within 18 months—a plan for which he has yet to detailed specifics.

"We have numerous things about what a Kast government will operate that are uncertain because he has not explained the way he will do them," commented a political science professor.

The expert added, "In terms of fiscal matters, it is highly probable we will see adjustment measures typical of the right-wing. But where there is much less ambiguity is on public safety, because that has been his central theme throughout the campaign."
