'Serious blow' for the English camp after Atkinson leaves the field with a hamstring injury.
The English seamer added to England's injury problems when he left the playing area during Saturday's play of the Boxing Day Test in the Ashes series.
The pace bowler pulled up with his hamstring after the final ball in his spell at the MCG.
The England team indicated Atkinson reported "discomfort" and required time away from the action for further assessment "during the day".
The series decider in this Ashes battle at the SCG starts this coming Sunday.
The visitors have previously lost fast bowlers Mark Wood to a knee injury and Jofra Archer to a side strain during this series.
Matthew Fisher was called up as cover for Wood.
His form was underwhelming in the opening two Tests, taking just three wickets.
He was left out from the previous Test, only to be brought back for the fourth Test in the playing XI.
The county bowler performed better in the fourth Test, claiming a couple of wickets in Australia's first innings, and scoring 28 runs as a batsman among just a trio of teammates to reach double figures.
Following a brief spell late on the first day, he came back the next day and dismissed the nightwatchman taken by the wicketkeeper.
Unfortunately, at the end of his spell, he sent down a change of pace to Travis Head and immediately felt his left hamstring.
The English bowler was brought back for the Melbourne match having missed the Adelaide game.
