The latest Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled several intriguing upcoming titles, but one in particular has captured attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure seems to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive game where a girl harboring multiple human souls inside her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of high school age. Inside her exist four separate personas, all possessing unique anxieties and motivations. These souls can take over at will, releasing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.
Judging by showcased footage, much of the action takes place within a creepy medical facility, though other scenes show the protagonist exploring a abandoned chapel.
"What are you fearful of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Things that appear minor to other people can trigger something primal inside us. This game explores that concept — fears that are specific to each person."
The central gameplay loop involves controlling the persona that surfaces at a particular moment. However, these souls will switch against your will during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the protagonist one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Initially, UN:Me shares striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with orderlies all sporting the same face, with disturbingly broad grins. Patients in the lobby have large blooms where their necks are. Flowers are a recurring theme, contrasting natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the souls claims that the physical form is rightfully them," notes a creator. "During the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
Once players have deduced a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, since every entity can deceive or hide the truth, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] by your own actions," the narration states. "The last one remaining might be a fraud. Either way, your decisions are final."
UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed launch window, but it is can be wishlist on platforms.
