A seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has been granted a special invitation for the first Grand Slam of the year, which kicks off on January 18 in Melbourne.

The event organizers confirmed on Friday that the 45-year-old legend will make a return at the tournament venue a remarkable 28 years after her debut. During 1998, she defeated her younger sister Serena in the second round before exiting in the quarter-finals to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

The tennis star had earlier stated in November her intention to compete in Auckland, New Zealand, where she also received a wild card, a fortnight prior to the Melbourne event. Organizers added that Williams is also entered to participate in Hobart, Australia a week later, just before the start of play at Melbourne Park.

Her most recent visit in Melbourne was in the year 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the singles competition on two occasions, falling short against Serena in the finals of 2003 as well as 2017.
