NYC's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to take up residence in the historic Gracie Mansion, vacating the rent-stabilised apartment that was a central issue during his campaign.
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the primary dwelling for most New York City mayors since the World War II era.
However, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a core platform, hesitated to declare his residency plans immediately after his victory in November.
"The choice came down to keeping my family safe and the importance of dedicating my complete efforts on implementing the agenda for affordability New Yorkers supported," the Mayor-Elect declared in a statement.
His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, an area famous for its diverse immigrant communities and international dining.
"To the people of Astoria: my gratitude for demonstrating what is great about New York City," he noted.
"Even though I'm moving there, Astoria will continue to reside a part of me and my work," he said.
During his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his core platform – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.
But his opponents, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for living in the rent-stabilized unit even though he hails from a famous family.
Not all mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, preferred to remain in his private home on the Upper East Side during his tenure, which wrapped up in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg said he believed it could serve as a space for official events, and championed a major refurbishment of the historic mansion.
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will be surrounded by an environment far removed from his previous Astoria apartment.
With its butter yellow paint, emerald shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.
Within, the ground floor of the classically designed mansion is appointed consistent with the home's historical period.
The property, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also includes increased security measures to protect the mayor and his family.
A number of people have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and closed by themselves, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "It doesn't matter the skeptics say," he stated in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
The apartment he is leaving is rent stabilised, which means the city regulates on how much landlords can increase rent each year.
City residents consider these apartments valuable lifelines as the cost of housing exceeds the means of many residents.
Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
