During the fall season, Adult Swim saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the channel introduced a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a animated take of a serene talk show. During a period often characterized by cynicism, this show's earnestness struck a chord and propelled it a surprise hit.
In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The series centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."
The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and supported its distinctly quirky sensibility.
"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about observing this endearing family go about their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to evolve comedy past its current cynical streak. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially be part of that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to enjoy the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
