The people of Israel mark second remembrance of 7 October attacks as Gaza peace talks advance

Citizens have assembled across the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-conducted offensive on 7 October 2023, as talks advanced in Egypt over a conclusion to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.

The incident led to more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken back to Gaza as captives. It was the single most lethal day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.

Israel answered by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken in excess of 67,000 people, according to the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are considered accurate by the UN and other international bodies.

Civilian Reaction

In Tel Aviv's public square earlier, 29-year-old a woman - whose brother lived through the incident on the Nova music festival, where hundreds were murdered and many more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - shared: "No place seems like home now and until all the hostages come back none of us will have peace of mind."

"After we see everyone home again, we can feel relief again. Then we can start to recover," she continued.

Near Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in the capital, people assembled to show their solidarity for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel reports forty-eight stay in detention in Gaza, 20 of whom are considered to be living.

Activist Atalia Regev explained: "It's necessary do every compromise required for the captives to return. But we truly desire promises that we will be protected."

At the area of Nova festival, grieving people came together to remember the victims.
