Manchester United are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
Schüller, who has half a year left on her deal, is known as a consistent goal-getter for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. Her arrival will be seen as a marquee coup for the Women’s Super League side.
Her exit from Munich has been anticipated since she appeared to be holding back emotions while thanking the German club’s fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its leading forwards. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the move have now been completed.
The experienced striker's arrival is expected to provide a major uplift to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been highly reliable with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
The acquisition of the German international coincides with a period when United appear to be gathering positive momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has brought further activity:
Regarding Miyazawa’s new deal, a club official commented: “Miyazawa is now a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much the club have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
