An speeding car that was evading police crashed into a crowded nightspot in the early hours on Saturday, killing four people and wounding 11 in a historic neighborhood of Tampa, renowned for its entertainment scene and visitors.
An air surveillance unit with the Tampa police department spotted the vehicle operating recklessly on a highway at about 12.40am after authorities said the silver sedan had been seen street racing in a different area, according to a law enforcement statement.
The Florida road police caught up with the car and tried to perform a maneuver that entails striking a back fender of a escaping vehicle to cause it to spin out, known as a precision immobilization technique, but it was unsuccessful.
State police officers “disengaged” as the vehicle raced toward the vintage downtown district near the city center, Tampa police reported. Ultimately, the driver failed to maintain control of the car and hit over a dozen people near the bar, police confirmed.
Three victims perished at the scene and a fourth victim died at a medical facility. As of Saturday morning, a fifth victim was hospitalized in critical condition, and 8 other patients were being cared for at local medical centers but were listed as not critical, authorities said. 2 additional victims sustained minor harm and refused medical aid at the scene. Every one of the 15 people are adults.
“What happened today was a pointless disaster, our hearts are with the loved ones of the victims and everyone who were affected,” the Tampa top law enforcement officer said in a statement.
Officers identified the alleged driver as 22-year Silas Sampson, who was arrested on the weekend and is being held at the Hillsborough county jail.
Court documents showed Sampson has been charged with four counts of vehicular homicide and four counts of aggravated fleeing or eluding with severe harm or fatality. All are first-degree crimes. Legal representation was listed for Sampson.
“The community feels this loss,” said the city’s leader, previously served as Tampa’s first female top cop, in a message on online platforms.
“My thoughts are with everyone affected. The investigation into this crash is continuing, and we are working to obtain answers,” she wrote.
In recent years, some states and local agencies have advocated to restrict the employment of rapid car chases to protect both civilians and police. After a rise in deaths, a 2023 report supported by the US justice department called for law enforcement pursuits to be minimized, noting that the risk to individuals, personnel and bystanders often outweighs the urgent requirement to take someone into custody.
However, the state has doubled down on the methods, with the state’s highway patrol revising its guidelines to relax restrictions on the use of vehicle pursuits and pit maneuvers. The federally supported report described these tactics as “dangerous” and “debated”.
