Vince Gilligan never anticipated that Pluribus would emerge as a breakout success. “The viewers have been incredible,” he remarks. “I was surprised by the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
With the first season of the popular series coming to an end—and the next chapter officially in the works—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the viewer reception and whether it will shape the narrative path of Pluribus.
One could easily to get swayed by the widespread acclaim and fan theories regarding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is striving to steer clear of all that.
“It feels like constantly eating hot fudge sundaes and being tickled to death,” he describes. “It's wonderful, but I get wind of it anecdotally, and that's by design. I have never Googled myself, nor do I ever plan to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a rabbit hole I know I would get lost in and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”
Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s it's impossible to ignore the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to accept it graciously and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“We make no attempt to change the plot,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not changed by what people are saying.”
“Better to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan concludes.
Given that Gilligan and his team aren’t being guided by audience theories, does that mean they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? Essentially yes… in a way.
“There are some interesting ideas about where the show might end up,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to abandon a good idea for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we conceive of something superior and I imagine we will be doing that.”
Alternatively, if they hit a wall, director and writer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to fall back on.
“My recurring proposal is that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” Smith quips, “but no one is buying it.”
Then again, why not reference the legendary finales?
“I want Carol to wake up in bed next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
