Whenever a teenage makes Real Madrid a historic moment in a pivotal European tie against City, it naturally attracts acclaim and the spotlight.
During his first start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the fifteen-time European champions secured a three-nil last-16 first-leg lead at the Bernabeu.
The young player, who also had his club debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted the Madrid side defeat the English champions in the midweek return to confirm a last eight place.
At 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch became the club's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating Brazil forward Vini Jr's record by a week and a half.
This talent is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most promising young players.
He joined Real from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe academies, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.
He progressed to the reserve side and it was in a pre-season game in which they faced the senior squad, then coached by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who took over from the previous coach in January.
Spanish media would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," noting Pitarch excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, character and determination he added to the side.
During the pre-season of 2025, former boss Alonso invited Pitarch to train with the first team and gave him minutes during pre-season.
However, it was the change in manager that became the turning point in his development as he came on as a second-half replacement in both ties against the Portuguese side that set up the clash with Manchester City.
"I've dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the first day I began playing football, each day you go to train and every day you play a match," said Pitarch after his debut.
"I have just achieved my dream with the greatest club in the world and in the best competition."
Handed a first start in La Liga against his former club - where he was for several seasons after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the following four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opening.
Pitarch has seized it with performances that have defied his age and inexperience.
"He is a extremely fast footballer, and you can see what he's capable of," remarked the coach. "He's incredibly energetic, with great stamina, work-rate and mobility."
Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his coach.
"His greatest quality is his personality," added Arbeloa. "He always wants the ball, and when pressed, he doesn't feel it.
"I realize people are surprised to watch him start in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had total trust in him to do what he usually does.
"He will keep receiving chances with the first team. It is delightful to coach a talent like him."
Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up fully immersed in the local game, progressing through local academies before entering the club's renowned youth academy.
He holds dual Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, offering him the choice to represent both nations at senior international level.
Under international regulations, players may appear for different countries at junior level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only final once they appear in a official full international.
He has played for Spain at youth level, representing both the under-19 and U20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja reached the last eight.
Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to any full national side, who are watching his rise with keen attention.
In a recent interview, the player confirmed: "I haven't made my ultimate choice yet. Things are great with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a conclusion in the near future."
This scenario mirrors that of other bi-national talents such as club colleague Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Yamal chose La Roja, Brahim opted to represent the Atlas Lions.
For now, his attention is on establishing himself in the Real side and rewarding his manager's belief.
He played over an hour in the two-one victory at City, which completed a 5-1 overall triumph and a last-eight matchup with Bayern Munich.
He was replaced by another academy player in Manuel Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in younger players to aid the club chase future success.
Following his impressive impact to date on the Champions League, the midfielder is tipped to play a key role in that.
"Arbeloa treats me the identical way. We handle it very naturally. I try not to overanalyze it too much - I must earn my playing time on the pitch," he commented after the success at Etihad Stadium.
